A couple of starting points

Just wanted to share the article from Macworld that gave me my original inspiration to quit nibbling ’round the edges of the home paperwork mess and get serious, with the right hardware, software, and workflow.

The real paperless office

A couple of months back, the author, Joe Kissel, wrote a followup article to the original.

In these articles, he gives a fairly thorough introduction to the tools of the trade and the overall process.

After I became more serious about what I do, I began to see that there is a great deal of depth in many of the subjects he discusses—the many possible workflows, for example. I am planning on expanding upon some of these topics in detail in future posts.

Besides the technical side of addressing paper reduction, I am also interested in the physical side—things people could do even if they don’t have a computer, to stem the flow at the source. I look forward to your ideas as this blog stumbles past its first days!

Here’s a post that gives an equally good overall treatment of the paperless home:

Components of a Paperless Office

Though I only stumbled across this article recently, the author’s experiences and short lists of requirements for a paperless home match my own very closely. Take a look.

[Update: Added the Productivity501 site link—don't know how I never saw that page before!]

We did a lot to reduce our incoming paper by moving to Mexico for awhile. :) A lot of the paper that comes in the mail can be stopped simply by asking people to not send it. Now that we are back in the US, we are back to the same level of incoming paper with various magazine subscriptions, etc.

I agree with you that the paper seems to be a US phenomenon. In my very first post I mentioned my South American wife’s low opinion of our North American paper.
